HOW TO DRAW FASHION FLATS

Home > General rules of technical drawing > Fundamental principles > Accuracy > Graphic design basics

Symmetry.

Left and right parts of the garment must be absolutely symmetrical (unless it is an asymmetrical design).

Symmetry is expected in fashion technical drawing because human body is symmetrical. Drawing of a fashion flat must be done by using a croquis. As long as your croquis is correct (see requirements for croquis) and a croquis is used correctly (see directions for how to use croquis) a fashion flat should be symmetrical as a croquis is symmetrical.

The best way to ensure symmetry of a fashion flat is to draw only one half of a garment (right or left) and then to flip it to be sure that symmetry is preserved. When drawing flats with pencil on paper, tracing paper or light box could be effectively used to reflect a drawing.
